In a small village in China's Yunnan region, Xiwen Jingchu Zhang mourns the sudden loss of her beloved, only child, a young boy poisoned by tainted food. Far away in Italy, Matteo Luca Barbareschi is a ruthless, high-powered player for Hong Kong-based Feng Multinational, an international conglomerate with many interests around the world Lured by the highly lucrative, international trafficking of adulterated foods, the suave and cynical Matteo has abandoned all scruples and conscience and is well on his way up the underworld corporate ladder. Crossing paths with Xiwen, the two instantly share a powerfully undeniable attraction. Tentatively, they begin to see one another, each experiencing feelings they no longer thought possible. Simultaneously, a jealous co-worker tired of living in Matteo's shadow has set into motion a plan to frame him for a triple murder.

But when the truth is revealed - and amidst the chaos swirling around them - Xiwen must now decide to forsake their love Inspired by world affairs and headlines on the real-life trafficking of adulterated foods.
Parental Guide. This film is directed, co-written and stars the Italian-Uruguayan actor, Luca Barbareschi. The dawn of the new millennium found him slogging away in straight-to-video fare alongside former cinematic chums like Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
In fact if anything it may be one of his stronger roles. A shame, then, that his famed martial skills are hardly put to the test as he only gets to show off a couple of kicks and engage in some poorly-staged gun battles. This is one of those films where the director tries to disguise the lack of budget by shooting the action scenes in the dark, where you can't quite see the cheap bullet squibs. Grenier has little of the skill these directors possess. Similarly, he fails to make the plot line very intriguing, leaving the viewer feeling a little bored and out of touch with the uninspiring leads as the film progresses.
No sympathetic characters are built up and instead we get far too many inserts of traffic travelling through a city with the film sped up. The effect is cool the first few times but quickly wears off, sadly it happens twenty more times through the movie. Generally disappointing, this has little to recommend it beyond Lundgren, the opening chase the only excitement in the whole film , and a guy who keeps a key glued to the inside of his toupee!
I admit up front I'm not a fan of this genre. Though I knew who Dolph Lundgren was, I'd never seen him or one of his movies. Tuning into what I thought was a different film called "Hidden Agenda," I got a look at all 6'5 of Dolph Lundgren, the high cheekbones etc.
This film is apparently different from other Lundgren films according to other reviews, but I can't judge it on that basis. In the story, Lundgren plays Jason Price, a former government agent. His job is to help people disappear.
However, it appears that a hit man called The Cleaner has somehow infiltrated Price's group and is knocking off people the FBI wanted to protect. It's up to Price to find out who it is. This is one of those films where you can't tell the bad people from the good, so everyone is suspect.
In the second part, our hero Chevalier de Fronsac will not only have to fight the Beast, but also ignorance, bigotry and conspiracy and will rely on two women, one an aristocrat, the other a prostitute, as well as the enigmatic Mani, an Iroquois he met in New-France Canada. Parental Guide. Here, a cryptozoological approach to the killings is entertained--that there is some fanciful creature like a Bigfoot or Loch Ness Monster killing people.
Now this sort of fantasy story is not a bad thing--but how it's all handled irritated me in so many ways. While superficially the film appeared to be from this era circa , so much of it is hogwash--anachronistic crap that teenagers might think is cool but which have absolutely no place in a period piece. Here are a few examples: Martial arts fights like you might see in Japan or China, crazy special effects, witches and lots of gratuitous nudity.
It seems more like a video game's version of history than history! Give me a break. Dumb and a bit offensive--just what I want in a movie! By the way, this film reminded me in some ways of the recent film "Sleepy Hollow" which also was very anachronistic, slick and vacuous. This modern French epic is a strange, definitely unique amalgamation of a number of different genres: set during the French Revolution, the storyline starts off as a classic horror yarn, with peasant girls being hunted down by an unseen beast presumably a werewolf ; then things move into a mystery-thriller with plenty of conspiracy and dark shadows; finally the film reveals itself to be an action-adventure, incorporating some very visceral and exciting elements of the classic revenge story into its design.
There are also plenty of moments of drama and not a little romance thrown into the mixture. The result? Well, sometimes its muddled, sometimes it doesn't feel right and sometimes the whole thing gets a little bit silly, but for the most part this is an enthralling, thrilling film with a fresh feel and an unpredictable narrative.
It's also one of the most surprising and entertaining films I've seen in a long time, lacking the predictability of most modern movies, sequels or otherwise. Director Christopher Gans is obviously an accomplished technician, taking care to deliver a film with a distinctive visual style.
The colour palette is exaggerated yet beautiful in equal parts; for the best example, check the splendid red costumes of the French aristocracy in comparison to the subdued, dull gloom of the haunted woodlands. Atmosphere and suspense are strong throughout, and definite care is taken with the sound editing, whether it be the ceaseless patter of the driving rainfall or the heaving atmosphere of a noisy brothel.
I just couldn't get into this. It looked cheap and some of the acting was horrendous. Left me cold. Login Register. Loading, please wait.
